Iftars of unity – Moments of togetherness, support, and hope

26 April 2025

The month of Ramadan carries a special symbolism – it is a time of fasting, spiritual purification, and gratitude. However, Ramadan is much more than an individual journey; it is a time of togetherness, solidarity, and connection with others. Shared iftars embody this spirit, offering an opportunity for people to gather, share a meal, and foster a sense of belonging.

In the past period, we had the honor of organizing a series of meaningful iftars for our beneficiaries in the Reception centers in Sarajevo and Bihać, as well as in the Day center in Bihać, bringing the warmth of home even to those far from their homeland.

One of the special events took place in the Day center, where we hosted representatives from Caritas Ambrosiana, Rete Milano, FOM, Don Diego Marostica, and Stradajeva from Italy. The evening was filled with joy, laughter, and invaluable moments of connection. The shared meal was not just food – it was an act of solidarity, support, and empathy.

In another remarkable gathering, the Day Center opened its doors to 40 students from Italy, in cooperation with IPSIA BiH. After an educational session on migration and the work of JRS BiH, the students joined families from the Temporary reception center Borići to prepare iftar together, exchanging stories and cultures. The evening concluded with a traditional Moroccan dance, celebrating the beauty of diversity and shared values.

Ramadan reminds us that every meal we share is an opportunity to show care for one another. Last week, we organized iftars in the Reception centers, filled with warmth, hope, and a sense of belonging. These were not just meals – they were moments where friendships were built, and life stories were shared. We sincerely thank local associations, the community, and SOS Balkanroute for their support and active participation.

A particularly significant event was the first iftar of this year’s Ramadan in the Reception center for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers and vulnerable children. Beneficiaries prepared traditional Persian dishes alongside Bosnian specialties, reflecting on the values of fasting – self-discipline, patience, and gratitude. This iftar was more than just a meal; it was an act of solidarity, support, and generosity, strengthening the sense of community even in transit. After iftar, a collective prayer further deepened the spirit of connection and hope.

Shared iftars remind us that, despite our differences, we all strive for the same things – warmth, belonging, and understanding. We will continue to create spaces where diversity meets, and hearts connect.
