A day of hope and human dignity
30 September 2025

This month, we organized an integrative activity on Mount Igman, where our beneficiaries from TRC Blažuj had the opportunity to spend a day away from their daily routines. The trip offered a valuable change of environment and allowed them to temporarily set aside their everyday worries. While some enjoyed socializing and relaxing in nature, others found peace in being close to the natural surroundings, reconnecting with both the environment and themselves.
The aim of this activity was to create a space where beneficiaries could feel more at ease, express their thoughts and emotions freely, and experience the importance of stepping outside their usual environment. Such experiences carry significant value for emotional and social empowerment, as they give participants a sense of control over their own experiences and room for introspective connection.
One of the beneficiaries from El Salvador shared his story, highlighting his determination and resilience. He said that he does not want to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina because he believes that enduring will help him reach his goal more quickly. He never ran away from challenges but always stayed to find a way to overcome them. His words strongly reflect the strength and perseverance that many beneficiaries demonstrate despite the difficulties and obstacles they face.
This activity also reflects the philosophy of Bill Yeomans, an Australian Jesuit who accompanied refugees in Asia and the Pacific. He once said:
“People who are hungry, homeless and friendless, lose their sense of human dignity so easily. It is not enough to give them what they need. I must give in such a way that my giving restores to them their own worth, their human dignity, so that their hope and trust in humankind may be rekindled.”
In line with this philosophy, our activity was not only about providing necessary support but also about fostering a sense of self-worth, dignity, and renewed trust in others.
This one-day trip to Mount Igman was much more than an outing in nature. It was an opportunity to restore a sense of dignity to our beneficiaries, to provide them with a space to express themselves and affirm their value, and to share moments of joy, relaxation, and connection with nature. Such moments remain lasting memories, empowering each beneficiary to continue their journey with greater hope and confidence.
